Lisa Anderson-Shaw, DrPH, MA, MSN, currently serves as director of the Ethics Consult Service at the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC) in Chicago. She helped to design and implement the current hospital-based consult service in 1998. Dr. Anderson-Shaw conducts most of the clinical case consultations and has helped to develop the consult service secured web-board for case consultation review by her peers. She has been a member of the UIMC Ethics Committee since 1989 and currently serves as the committee co-chair.
She is a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Institutional Review Board # 1. In June 2003, after initial research and development, she launched the UIMC sponsored “Illinois Health Care Ethics Committee” virtual discussion board and serves as the web board’s moderator.
She has been at UIMC since 1988 where she was the clinical nurse specialist in head and neck surgery at the UIC Eye and Ear Infirmary prior to working with the Ethics Consult service. She is a licensed and board-certified Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of Illinois, with over 25 years of nursing experience, most of which has been in the critical care areas. Dr. Anderson-Shaw is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UIC School of Nursing and UIC School of Medicine. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Lincoln Christian University, Concordia University in River Forrest, Illinois, DePaul University, Chicago, and at Loyola University, Chicago, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate ethics and health policy courses. In addition, she is a member of the Ethics Committee and provides clinical ethics consultation service to MacNeal Health Systems in Berwyn and to RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale.
Dr. Anderson-Shaw has been published extensively, including the Journal of Medical Ethics, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, Chest, The American Journal of Bioethics, Journal of Nursing Administration’s Healthcare Law, Ethics & Regulation, and Bone Marrow Transplantation and the Journal of NeuroOncology. She is on the editorial board for CHART – Journal of Nursing in Illinois and reviews for Critical Care Medicine, Transplant, American Journal of Bioethics, The American Journal of Transplantation, Saunders Book Company and the American Nurses Association Publications. She is a frequent speaker at national and international bioethics meetings. She is currently doing research related to the identification of ethical issues in routine ambulatory care settings, the concept of self-identity in patients with brain tumors, and issues in rural health care ethics. She has an interest in the role that religion and spirituality have on health and health care, especially with respect to the beginning of life and end of life ethical issues.
Dr. Anderson-Shaw completed a one-year post-doctorate fellowship followed by a 2-year senior fellowship at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. She received her BSN at Southern Illinois University, MSN from Indiana University, MA from Loyola University, Chicago and DrPH from the University of Illinois. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and The American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. She sits on the Lincoln Christian University Chicago area Presidents Advisory Board.
